Swedish Language Series: Beginners I

Tuesday, June 1, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m.

Class for Beginners I begins Tuesday, June 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. with instructor Eva May.   Each lesson is 1.5 hours, and classes run 8 weeks. Tuition is $100 for members, $135 for non-members. Books are not included in the tuition.

Beginners I

Class for Intermediate/Advanced begins Wednesday, June 2, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with instructor Anna Albinsson-Kaplan.   Each lesson is 1.5 hours, and classes run 8 weeks. Tuition is $100 for members, $135 for non-members. Books are not included in the tuition.

Intermediate/Advanced
Wednesdays, 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., starting June 2
For students who have a working knowledge of Swedish, including elementary conversation and reading. The course will cover advanced grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. The classes will be held in Swedish and English.

Exhibit Opening: 17 Swedish Designers

Friday, June 4, 6 p.m.- 8 p.m.

On Friday, June 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the traveling exhibit 17 Swedish Designers opens at the Museum as part of its 2009-2011 U.S. Tour.  Join us for the opening reception.  This is a free event.  Refreshments will be served.

17 Swedish Designers features 17 award-winning female artists and designers specializing in textiles, furniture, glassworks, and other mediums.  The exhibit’s artists and designers each display three to ten pieces, celebrating female artists and designers as well as Swedish innovative design.

Gallery Walk

Saturday, June 5, 11 a.m.

On Saturday, June 5, at 11 a.m., the Museum will host a gallery walk of the new exhibit 17 Swedish Designers in the Museum’s main floor gallery.   Reservations are recommended.

17 Swedish Designers features 17 award-winning female artists and designers specializing in textiles, furniture, glassworks, and other mediums.  The exhibit’s artists and designers each display three to ten pieces, celebrating female artists and designers as well as Swedish innovative design.

Book Signing of Chicago Swedes: They Spoke from the Heart by Lilly Setterdahl

Saturday, June 5, noon

On Saturday, June 5, at noon, the Museum will host a book talk and signing with Swedish-American author Lilly Setterdahl. Lilly Setterdahl will present her newest non-fiction book, Chicago Swedes: They Spoke from the Heart, which includes 340 oral histories and 300 photos produced by her late husband, Lennart Setterdahl. Copies of Chicago Swedes: They Spoke from the Heart can be purchased at the Kerstin Andersson Museum Store. Refreshments will be served.

Start with Art

Wednesday, June 9, 7:30 a.m. - 10 a.m.

On Wednesday, June 9, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Museum will host its quarterly Start with Art program with a special morning viewing of its new exhibit, 17 Swedish Designers.  Join us before your work day for free admission before 10 a.m., as well as coffee at this popular traveling exhibit.

Midsommarfest

Saturday, June 12, 11 a.m.--10 p.m.; Sunday, June 13, 11 a.m.--10 p.m.

Come celebrate Midsommar in Andersonville and visit the Museum for traditional Swedish music and dancing around the Maypole! 

Midsommarfest is held on Saturday, June 12, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Museum hours for both days are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Viewing of the Royal Wedding in Sweden

Saturday, June 19, 6 a.m. - noon

Join the Museum in celebrating the Royal Wedding of Her Highness Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling on Saturday, June 19, 2010!  The Museum will host a special live viewing of the wedding on June 19 from 6 a.m. to noon in the main floor gallery.  Coffee and refreshments will be available for purchase at this free event.  For more information, please e-mail the Museum at Museum@samac.org or call 772.728.8111.

The 5th Annual Jenny Lind Concert

Sunday, June 20, 3 p.m.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Music has selected the 2010 “Jenny Lind” to perform in Sweden and the United States, and this year’s winner is mezzo soprano Astrid Robillard.  Ms. Robillard will perform at the Museum with accompanist Henrik Berg, winner of the Otto Goldschmidt Music Accompaniment Award, on Sunday, June 20, at 3 p.m.   Cost is $12 for members, $15 for non-members.  Refreshments will be served, and reservations are recommended.

Family Night

Friday, June 25, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.

On Friday, June 25, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Museum will host Family Night, a free event with crafts, music, and more fun surrounding the Museum’s new exhibit, 17 Swedish Designers.  Reservations are recommended.

Genealogy Session – Traditions and Holidays

Saturday, June 26, 10 a.m. - noon

Learn about Swedish traditions – What do you eat? When is the holiday celebrated? Why do Swedes celebrate the holiday? Is there holidays that are tied to specific Swedish regions?
There is much to learn. Come at 10 a.m. and learn about traditions and then share your family’s holiday celebrations.

Nätragillet, Swedish Folk Dancers

Saturday, June 26, 7 p.m.

Enjoy Swedish Midsommar at the Museum with a special Midsommar program and dance party on Saturday, June 26, at 7 p.m.  Nätragillet, folk dancers from Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, will begin the evening with an entertainment program of their favorite traditional Midsommar dances.  After their performances, put on your own dancing shoes and have fun with friends old and new as the musicians play for your dancing and listening pleasure.

A light Midsommar buffet of foods typically found during this holiday will be served.  Cost is $10 per person.  Please reserve your spot by e-mailing Museum@samac.org or calling 773.728.8111.

Guided Tour of Permanent Exhibit

Sunday, June 27, 11 a.m.

Please join the Museum for a guided tour of our permanent exhibit, A Dream of America: Immigration to Chicago, at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 27.  To learn more about the permanent exhibit, please click here.

It is an exciting tour, and a perfect combination of entertainment and education. Cost for the tour is $4 adults, $3 seniors and students, and Museum members are free. Reservations are recommended.  Please call 773.728.8111 or e-mail Museum@samac.org to reserve your spot.
