Learn about the neighborhood’s Swedish heritage in our Museum-led Walking Tour of Andersonville! The Walking Tour of Andersonville takes place on Thursday, July 5, at noon.
The tour starts and ends at the Museum. Tour books can be found at our front desk–grab one before our Walking Tour or use them to explore Andersonville on your own!
Tuesday, July 10, 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, July 10, at 7 p.m., the International Voices Project (IVP) will host a drama performance at the Swedish American Museum. This international group is collaborating with the Museum and the Consulate General of Sweden to perform “Invasion,” written by Jonas Hassen Khemiri and translated by Frank Perry. Anna Bahow will direct the performance at the Museum.
“Invasion” centers on cultural, language and racial prejudices and forces the viewer to confront them head-on. It takes the example of an Arabic male identity and then lets the audience reflect on their own identities.

Wednesday, July 11, 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, July 11, from 1:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., the Museum will host a cleaning fair and demonstration with Norwex as part of Andersonville’s Green Week. Norwex, a company with Scandinavian roots, specializes in quality eco-friendly products for personal care and cleaning. Norwex consultant Elisabeth Hubbard will be on hand to give demonstrations (see schedule below), answer questions and give you a chance to win free products.

Wednesday, July 11, 2 p.m. - 9 p.m.
On Wednesday, July 11 from 2 p.m. – 9 p.m., eco-Andersonville will host a sustainability fair demonstration at the Museum. This event will offer Andersonville residents a chance to view and participate in presentations and demonstrations from a diverse selection of Chicago businesses and non-profits who are dedicated to fostering the principles of sustainability.

Thursday, July 12, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Join the Swedish American Museum and the American Indian Center for a Chicago Cultural Alliance (CCA) “Talking About” dialogue on Thursday, July 12, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. This dialogue will center on gardening–specifically berries found in Swedish, Native American and American gardens. This event takes place at the American Indian Center, 1630 W. Wilson Ave. in Chicago. There is a suggested donation of $10 per person. Berry tasting will take place during the dialogue.
This CCA dialogue is sponsored by the Swedish American Museum, the American Indian Center and Uniting America.

This summer kids can travel the world without ever leaving Chicago! Campers are introduced to the food, customs, folk arts, and cultural identities of four different countries in our “Pioneer the World” day camp. Families are invited to attend our very own “World’s Fair” on the last day, where campers display their handiwork to the public.

The Museum will host a documentary screening and discussion on Friday, July 13, at 6 p.m. as part of Andersonville’s Green Week. The film screening of “Urban Roots,” which is about urban agriculture in Detroit, will be followed by a discussion on urban agriculture in Chicago with Growing Home, Urban Habitat Chicago, and the Petersen Garden Project.

Saturday, July 14, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Musicians and instructors Mary Allsopp and Paul Tyler will co-host a Scandinavian Jam at the Swedish American Museum the second Saturday of every month from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. All ages are invited to bring any instrument, regardless of level. The Museum would like to welcome back Sofia Talvik with a concert on Thursday, July 26, at 7 p.m.
Sofia is a Swedish pop singer who’s made an indelible impression on U.S. audiences at big music festivals such as Lollapalooza, South by Southwest and CMJ Rock Hall Music Festival. She is currently on an acoustic-set tour in the U.S. promoting her new album, “The Owls Are Not What They Seem.” To learn more about Sofia, please click here to visit her website.
Reservations are recommended. Cost: $15 per person online, $20 per person at the door.
Tickets for the VIP reception beginning at 6 p.m., which includes a concert ticket, are $25 and can only be purchased online in advance on our website.

On the weekend of July 27 to 29, 2012, the Museum will participate in Andersonville’s annual Sidewalk Sale, where neighborhood stores line the sidewalks of Clark Street offering special sales. The Museum will have both highly discounted items from the store as well as collectibles, knickknacks and jewelry from the annual Tantalizing Treasures Sale.
