Wednesday, Sept. 1, 7 p.m.
Join the Swedish American Museum, SACC and SWEA for a Swedish Soccer Evening! On Wednesday, Sept. 1, come see the Chicago Red Stars as they take on the Philadelphia Independence on a first-ever Swedish Night at Toyota Park.
UPDATE: Kosovare Asllani will no longer be present at Swedish Night. Sara Larsson and Caroline Seger of the Philadelphia Independence will be at Swedish Night’s meet and greet at Toyota Park.
The tailgate picnic and festivities begin at 5 p.m., the gates open at 6 p.m., and the game starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $13and $28, and tickets must be purchased in advance. To visit the Swedish Night Web page, please click here.

The exhibit Nordic Light, a display of paintings by Swedish artist Johan Thunberg, opens at the Swedish American Museum on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is a free event. For more information on the exhibit, please click here.

On Saturday, Sept. 4, from 11 a.m. to noon, the Swedish American Museum will host a gallery walk of the new exhibit, Nordic Light, in the Museum’s main floor gallery. For more information on the exhibit, please click here.
Tuesday, Sept. 7, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Beginners I, Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m., starting Sept. 7
This class is for students who have no knowledge of the Swedish language. Students will learn the fundamentals: basic grammar, vocabulary, conversation, Swedish culture and traditions. Classes will be held in English.
The Museum offers four levels of evening Swedish classes. Each class is 1-½ hours; classes run 12 weeks. The instructors are Eva May (Beginners I & II) and Anna Albinsson-Kaplan (Intermediate & Conversation/Advanced). Tuition is $150 for members, $185 for non-members. This class is for students who have mastered the skills at the intermediate level and want to practice the Swedish language. The course will focus on advanced conversation, discussions, reading, and comparisons of Swedish and American culture and traditions. Classes will be held in Swedish.

Join us for an evening of crafts and activities for the whole family in celebration of our new art exhibit, Nordic Light. This is a free event. Reservations are recommended.

Please join the Museum for a guided tour of our permanent exhibit, A Dream of America: Immigration to Chicago, led by Museum curator Veronica Robinson at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19. To learn more about the permanent exhibit, please click here.

Thursday, Sept. 23, 7 p.m.
Charles Troy is a graphic designer who, over the last six years, has developed more than 35 multimedia presentations on musical theatre subjects. On Sept. 23, at 7 p.m., Troy will walk us through the creation of “A Little Night Music,” which is based on Ingmar Bergman’s film “Smiles of a Summer Night.”
Troy’s presentation combines scans of rare photos and his own original
graphics, plus audio tracks, video clips, and an absorbing narrative which weaves all the pertinent events into a dramatic tale. Cost: $20 members, $25 non-members. Refreshments will be served. Saturday, Sept. 25, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

All ages are welcome for this family event to help remind children to enjoy and appreciate nature and outdoor life, through the eyes of the Swedish character Mulle. Participants can make an eco-friendly craft and enjoy an urban nature walk. Reservations are required. Cost is $5 per child, children under 2 are free. Morning session: 10 a.m. to noon–Discussing Intellectual Property and Copyright Issues on Saturday, Sept. 25.
The Nordic Family Genealogy Center hosts genealogy sessions from 10 a.m. to noon the fourth Saturday of each month. Additional time is given to beginner researchers every other month, between 1 p.m. and 2: 30 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, 6 p.m.
Viking weave is an ancient stitch found in fragments in many graves in Scandinavia, and the Museum will offer a workshop for participants who want to try this weaving. The instructor will provide all tools and materials—wire, bead caps, and a clasp. The price of these materials is included in the cost of the class. Cost: $30 per person.
