Beginners I is for students who have no knowledge of the Swedish language. Students will learn fundamentals: basic grammar, vocabulary, conversation, Swedish culture and traditions. Classes will be held in English. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting Sept. 4, 2012.
The Beginners I course will include fifteen 90 minute lessons, classes run fifteen weeks. The instructor is Eva May. Tuition is $205 for Museum members, $240 for non-Museum members. Books are not included in tuition. Please enclose a check with the application or pay online.

Intermediate is for students who have working knowledge of Swedish, including elementary conversation and reading. The course will cover advanced grammar, vocabulary and conversation. The classes will be held in Swedish and English. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting Sept. 5, 2012.

Conversation/Advanced is for students who have the skills in Intermediate mastered and want to practice the Swedish language. The course will focus on advanced conversation, discussions, reading, and comparisons of Swedish and American culture and traditions. Classes will be held in Swedish. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. starting Sept. 5, 2012.

Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
First Thursday of the Month, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
This month we are showing an Ingmar Bergman movie from 1955.
Sandwiches, popcorn and candy available at a small cost. The movie is free of charge.

Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, 7 p.m.
Nacka Musikklasser (Nacka Music Classes) was founded in 1984 in Nacka, a town situated just outside Stockholm. Nacka Musikklasser has 300 students, between the ages of 9 and 16. Nacka Musikklasser perform in many concerts annually. Every year the ninth graders (aged 15-16) travel abroad to further their musical experiences, but this is the first visit to the United States. The concert program will be a mix of Swedish traditional music and modern pop arrangements.
The Concert is Free. Donations welcome.

Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, 1:30 p.m.
Musicians and instructors Mary Allsopp and Paul Tyler will co-host a Scandinavian Jam at the Swedish American Museum the second Saturday of every month from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. All ages are invited to bring any instrument, regardless of level. The 33st Annual Scandinavian Day Festival again takes place in Vasa Park, South Elgin, Ill. Call the Scandinavian Day Hotline at 847.695.6720 or visit www.scandinaviandayil.com for more information. The Museum will participate in the festivities and have many items available from the Museum Store.
Wednesday, Sept. 19, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Andersonville’s Farmer’s Market runs every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting on Wednesday, June 13 and then from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Local and regional vendors set up shop on Berwyn Avenue in between Clark Street and Ashland Avenue to sell fresh and specialty products.
On Wednesday, Sept. 19, stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables and lingonberries as well! Stop by the Farmer’s Market and pay a visit to the Swedish American Museum booth. We will have a great variety of Swedish food and cooking related items for sale, rain or shine.
Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, 7:30 p.m.
Join a dance group from Sweden and our own Chicago Nordic Folk Dancers in a fun dancing evening. The dancers will share their dances with everyone. It will be a very participatory evening of learning new dances in an informal atmosphere. Music is – traditional, modern, Swedish “dance party”. Anything with the right beat will work. The Swedish dancers are very excited to bring this type of folk dancing to the US and are looking forward to working with all of us.
Hone your skills of watching and doing. Combines audience participation, barn dance, round dance and set dance all into one.

On Friday, Sept. 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Museum’s new exhibit The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank opens. This exhibit opening is a free event.
The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank is a traveling exhibition of textiles and furnishings by this Austrian-born designer made famous for the Modern Style movement in Sweden. This exhibit is currently on display at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, Min. More information to come.

“Research Day”
On Saturday, Sept. 22, the Nordic Family Genealogy Center at the Swedish American Museum will host a research day at this month’s genealogy session. Individuals will have time to conduct their own research using our qualified Genealogy Center members’ expertise.

Please join the Museum for a guided tour of our permanent exhibit, A Dream of America: Swedish Immigration to Chicago, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, with Museum curator Veronica Robinson. To learn more about the permanent exhibit, please click here.

On Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. the Museum will host a special early-morning preview of its new exhibit The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank. This early-morning preview is a free event.
