Viking Spirit Raffle Tickets and More

Our annual ball, Viking Spirit, is a few weeks away, and we are still selling raffle tickets to support the Museum.   All are invited to purchase tickets to benefit the Museum.  One ticket is $20, but you may purchase six tickets for a special price of $100.  Grand prize is roundtrip airfare for two to Sweden!

Herring Breakfast

The Museum’s popular traditional fried herring breakfast is this Sunday, Oct. 3, at noon, and it features an array of Swedish dishes and entertainment by Karen Lindblad and Borrowed Light.  Cost: $20 for members, $25 for non-members.  Reservations are required, so reserve your spot before it fills up!  Click here to pay online, e-mail museum@samac.org, or call 773.728.8111 today!

Swedish Knitting Workshop

For those who missed out on our Viking Weave Workshop, check out our Swedish Knitting Workshop on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. with Lenore Larson Johnson!   Beginners will learn to make a simple scarf pattern, and advanced knitters will learn to knit a pair of Lovikka mittens.  Basic knitting skills required.  Instructions, a pattern, and two skeins of Swedish imported yarn included in the cost, but please bring your own knitting needles.  Cost: $25 members, $30 non-members.  For more information or to reserve your spot, please click here.

Museum Day on September 25, 2010

The Swedish American Museum is a proud participant of the Smithsonian Magazine‘s 6th Annual Museum Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010.  Enjoy free admission for two to the Museum by downloading, printing and showing the front desk the Museum Day Admission Card, which you can access by clicking here.  Thousands of American museums and cultural centers will be alongside the Swedish American Museum in celebrating Museum Day, and you can too!   One pass per household only.

Learn to Love and Care for Nature with Mulle

Would you like to teach your children about the importance of caring for the environment?  Then join the Swedish American Museum for the special eco-friendly event, Mulle’s Outdoor Andersonville Adventure, this Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in an effort to learn about Swedish culture and environmental care.  To learn more about who Mulle is and how your children can appreciate nature, please click here.

Learn the Ancient Stitch of Viking Weave

Viking weave is an ancient stitch found in fragments in many graves in Scandinavia, and the Museum will offer a workshop for participants who want to try this weaving on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.   The instructor will provide all tools and materials, which includes wire, bead caps, and a clasp.  The price of these materials is included in the cost of the class.   Cost: $30 per person.  Light refreshments will be served.  Class size is limited to eight people, so sign up soon!   Pre-paid reservations are required.   Please pay online by clicking here, or you may e-mail the Museum at Museum@samac.org,or call 773.728.8111 to register.

International Night

Join the Museum as it welcomes its members and many others to a night of sharing cultures on Friday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m!  The Swedish American Museum is represented by a host of cultural backgrounds and ethnicities, and these will all be on display as we enjoy the many wonderful stories, foods, and selected musical contributions from each nationality present. Museum Dreaming

Registration for Museum Dreaming is now closed.  Please check our website at a later time for future dates.

Ever wonder what it would be like to spend the night in a Museum? Come and see at our first ever Museum Dreaming! From Friday night, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. to Saturday morning, Nov. 6 at 8 a.m., guests will enjoy dinner, crafts, games, adventures, and breakfast, all while the Museum is closed to the public. Geared for children ages 5 and up; children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Guests are required to provide their own bedding. Cost: $75 per person members, $85 per person non-members. Chicago Spelmanslag Anniversary Party

Chicago Spelmanslag will celebrate it’s 20th anniversary with a dinner and dance party at the Swedish American Museum on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.  All are invited to join in the fun with a traditional Scandinavian Smørgåsbord / Kaldtbord catered by Tre Kronor Restaurant, followed by a night of Scandinavian folk dancing!

Viking Spirit Raffle Tickets

The Museum is now selling raffle tickets for Viking Spirit, our annual dinner, dance and auction!  The grand prize is two round-trip coach tickets to Sweden on SAS, and the second prize is a delicious Julbord (Christmas dinner) for two during December 2010 at Tre Kronor Restaurant in Chicago*.  The third prize is two tickets to the SACC Lucia Luncheon on Friday, Dec. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at the Union League Club in Chicago.  Finally, the fourth prize is an Orrefors Crystal Bowl.

The Creation of “A Little Night Music”-A Multimedia Program by Charles Troy

Are you interested in theater and film?  What about Swedish culture?  If so, you will find this upcoming event of high interest!  On Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m., graphic designer Charles Troy will walk us through the creation of “A Little Night Music,” which is based on Ingmar Bergman’s film, “Smiles of a Summer Night.”   Troy’s presentation combines scans of rare photos and his own original graphics, plus audio tracks, video clips, and an absorbing narrative which weaves all the pertinent events into a dramatic tale

Learn to Love and Care for Nature with Mulle

Would you like to teach your children about the importance of caring for the environment?  Then join the Swedish American Museum for the special eco-friendly event, Mulle’s Outdoor Andersonville Adventure, on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in an effort to learn about Swedish culture and environmental care.

Swedish character Skogsmulle (Forest Mulle) is known for teaching children to love and respect nature, and he has promoted interest and appreciation for the environment with Swedish children for over 40 years.  Mulle will do the same with children of our neighborhood at Mulle’s Outdoor Andersonville Adventure!

All ages are welcome for this family event to help remind children to enjoy and appreciate outdoor life, through the eyes of the Swedish character Mulle. Participants can make an eco-friendly craft and enjoy an urban nature walk around Andersonville. Reservations are recommended.  The cost is $5 per child, children under 2 are free. Nordic Light is Now Open

The Museum’s new exhibit, Nordic Light, is now open.  Visit us for 30 watercolors and paintings by Swedish artist Johan Thunberg, in which he captures the “special [Swedish] light” in nature.  Using landscape in his own naturalistic and individualistic way, the artist claims to give the same that he sees—all the beautiful things nature gives you.

Viking Spirit Raffle

The Museum will soon be selling raffle tickets for it’s annual ball, Viking Spirit.  This year’s annual fundraising event  takes place on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010 at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago.  The Museum will celebrate our shared Viking heritage with the Irish as well as our links to our Museum, members, friends, and supporters at Viking Spirit.  For more information on our annual ball, please click here.

Swedish Language Classes Begin This Week

Swedish Language Classes start this week on Tuesday, Sept. 7 and Wednesday, Sept. 8.  Classes run for 12 weeks this Fall, and four levels will be taught:  Beginners I, Beginners II, Intermediate, and Conversation/Advanced.  To learn more about the Swedish Language Classes, please click here
