On Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 the new exhibition Considering Flowers opened at the Museum. Considering Flowers displays a collection of watercolor floral paintings by Swedish-American artist, historian and gardener Karen Vaughn Harding of Rockford.
In this exhibit, the artist sets out to tell the stories of her flowers and garden in watercolors—something many artists have done before her and will continue to do. “Equally captivated by floral beauty and its evocative power, painters have always filled their canvases with flowers, using them as decorative or symbolic elements,” she says.

Please note: Beginners I and Beginners II classes are delayed one week. They will begin Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012 at the same scheduled times.

Våffeldagen, which is usually celebrated on March 25, is the feast of Marie Bebådelsedagen (or Annunciation Day). That was the day, in Christian theology, the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus.
Swedes have found a great way of celebrating this day: we eat waffles! The Museum will celebrate Våffeldagen on Friday, March 23, where we will begin serving delicious Swedish waffles from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Cost: $5 per serving.
This event has been cancelled for this year. We will be back next year with our Swedish-American Easter “Påsk” workshop. This is a great way to start your Easter! Learn about traditional Easter food, decorate a “påskris,” and paint eggs both the Swedish and American way. Children dressed up in Easter costumes will receive a special treat. Refreshments will be served during the workshop. Cost: $10 members, $15 non-members. Reservations are required.
Join Pippi Longstocking, a popular Swedish character, for Swedish pancakes, crafts, singing and dancing. This is a unique opportunity to meet Pippi and learn how to make pancakes Pippi-style! All ages are welcome. Pre-paid and confirmed reservations are required.
