“Google for Genealogists”
On Saturday, Aug. 25, the Nordic Family Genealogy Center will host a special lecture and research session with Thomas MacEntee, nationally-known genealogy author, educator, and speaker. He will present on using Google search engine when conducting genealogy research.
Mr. MacEntee is a professional genealogist specializing in the use of technology and social media to improve genealogy research. He has reported that most genealogists only use 10% or less of the resources behind Google when it comes to research. Learn how to use the other 90%!
Registration for this event takes place at 10:15 am, and the program will start at 10:30 a.m. Free to Museum and Nordic Family Genealogy members, $10 for non-members.

Located on Millennium Park’s Promenade North, the Family Fun Festival Tent from Monday, Aug. 20 through Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012 brings music, crafts, games, and fun to families. Come celebrate Swedish traditions with us throughout the week from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Saxell captures images of her adopted homeland with a naïve perspective, bringing winding medieval streets and little houses to life in distinctive landscapes. Her work is characterized by bold, rich color and a playful energy that speaks directly to the observer.

Take a break from your regular schedule and enjoy a movie at the Swedish American Museum the first Thursday of every month this spring at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Thursday, June 7, the film is “Before the Frost” (Innan frosten)
“Before the Frost” comes from the popular Swedish crime fiction series with Inspector Kurt Wallander, written by Henning Mankell. In this episode, Wallander’s daughter, Linda, aims to solve her first crime–a murder mystery taking place near the coastal town of Ystad, Sweden. The Andersonville Development Corporation is hosting their Honors Gala at the Museum on Thursday, April 26, at 6p.m. It is an evening of celebrating Andersonville and honoring its community, and the Swedish American Museum is thankful to be nominated for the “Art/Service Organization of the Year” Award. On Friday, March 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Museum’s new exhibit Images of Sweden: From the Artist’s Brush and the Photographer’s Lens opens. The exhibit opening is free and open to the public. This is a display of photography and paintings by Rev. Tord Harlin and his wife, Gunnel, a Swedish family involved in education and fighting poverty through the Lutheran World Federation of Sweden.

The Museum would like to welcome back Sofia Talvik with a concert on Thursday, July 26, at 7 p.m.
Sofia is a Swedish pop singer who’s made an indelible impression on U.S. audiences at big music festivals such as Lollapalooza, South by Southwest and CMJ Rock Hall Music Festival. She is currently on an acoustic-set tour in the U.S. promoting her new album, “The Owls Are Not What They Seem.” To learn more about Sofia, please click here to visit her website.

Tickets for the VIP reception beginning at 6 p.m., which includes a concert ticket, are $25 and can only be purchased online in advance on our website.
Please join us in a tribute to Swedish diplomat and humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg, who save tens of thousands of Jews in Hungary during World War Two.
The tribute will take place on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at noon in Chicago’s Daley Plaza. There will be a flag-raising ceremony and greetings from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Governor Pat Quinn, Honorary Consul General Ulf Anvin, and the Executive Director of the Illinois Holocaust Museum, Rick Hirschhaut.
Summer songs will be sung by a Swedish Choir.

The Tantalizing Treasures Sale is a benefit sale at the Swedish American Museum, where new and/or gently used donated items are sold during a day-long event open to the public and proceeds benefit the Museum.
We ask that donations for the Treasures Sale be donated by the morning of Thursday, April 19, 2012. If you have any questions or large-scale donations, please contact the Museum at 773.728.8111.
